Garden roses, peonies, orchids
Long-stem reds for the occasions that call for them, and garden roses for the people who have been sent long-stem reds a hundred times.
There are two kinds of rose order. The first is the classic: two dozen long-stem reds, tall vase, no ambiguity about what is being said. We keep those in stock every day of the year and we buy the good grade — 60 to 70 centimeter Ecuadorian stems with heads that actually open.
The second is for someone who has received the first many times. Garden roses — Juliet, Kahala, Quicksand, Playa Blanca — are shorter, ruffled, heavily scented and far more interesting. They cost more per stem and are worth it. Ask us which are good this week.
We buy by stem length and head size, not by the bunch. A dozen of our long-stems will not include three short ones to make up the count.
Domed designs in a lined round box, built tight so no water is needed for the evening. The classic gift that photographs well.
Real roses treated to last a year or more without water, arranged in glass or a box. For people who cannot bear to throw flowers away.
Roughly late April through June in our market, with a second Chilean window in November. We will tell you when they are genuinely good and when they are not.

Questions
Because the whole world wants the same flower in the same week and the growers price accordingly. Our cost per stem roughly triples in early February. We publish the seasonal price rather than shrinking the bouquet quietly, which is the more common trick.
A garden rose is bred for scent, ruffle and open form rather than shipping durability. Fewer stems per plant, shorter vase life, dramatically more beautiful. Juliet and Kahala are the two we stock most often.
One to three years out of direct sunlight and away from humidity. They are real roses, treated with a glycerin solution — not silk, not plastic. They never need water.
Yes, with a day's notice so we can order the grade rather than emptying the cooler. Large rose orders for proposals and anniversaries are routine here.
